The Met Police started their 100th full season with a convincing Surrey League victory against old friends and rivals Old Emanuel at Imber Court. A glorious summer afternoon (more Mediterranean than Indian) saw the Met run in nine unanswered tried, leaving the plod sitting atop the nascent Surrey 3 league table with maximum points and a very healthy points differential.
Sam Druce recorded an impressive 21 points, making up for missing one conversion kick by scoring a second half try, ably supporting Jack Scott and Sam Bailey who both scored a brace of tries, the latter's coming from the middle of the front row. Other try scorers included Richard Blears, showing a rare turn of pace for an old man at blindside flanker, Fred Dalley, Jack Doswell-Lowe making an immediate impact of the bench, and Joe Stirrup who rounded off the try scoring exploits that his scrum-half performance richly deserved.
A special mention to club stalwart Gavin Bolton who answered an 11th hour front row crisis to make a 1st XV appearance, 21 years after his debut. He clearly has John Montgomery's 29 years in his sights!
Old Emanuel have come through a difficult period in their recent history and it was a pleasure to welcome the Raynes Park outfit back to Imber Court. It was a tough start for them and they stuck to the task in the face of a well-drilled Police performance.
The Met now travel to Worth Old Boys in Walton-on-Thames for a very early "top of the table" clash. OBs came out on top in a very high-scoring victory over London Exiles. Bec Old Boys and Effingham & Leatherhead were the other first weekend winners, both of whom should continue their winning starts to the season.
