CUP RUN ARRESTED

A high-scoring cup-tie ended in defeat for the Mighty Met, who continue to find success in the PSUK Cup frustratingly elusive. The Met were dreaming of ultimate glory in the Police competition to adorn the centenary celebrations at the end of the season. Unfortunately, Dyfed Powys Police hadn't read the script. The Met headed to the slightly unusual neutral venue of North Bristol RUFC with a strong squad, the majority of whom have become familiar with success in the Surrey League. Dyfed Powys are no scratch outfit though, contributing significantly to the National Police squad while more than holding their own in the Welsh League. And they defeated Police Scotland last time out.
The Met started solidly enough and took most of the plaudits for the first half. But the Met's defence has been somewhat fragile in 2024, conceding far too many tries, notably against League challengers Old Bec and Old Georgians, and the same weaknesses were exposed by a determined Welsh outfit, who moved a step closer to a showdown with local rivals, South Wales Police. The Met could be well satisfied with their six-try return, five of which were converted by the ever-reliable Sam Druce, less so with the six they conceded, many the result of Dyfed Powys carrying for a number of yards from the first phase, and exploiting subsequent overloads to full advantage. It must also be noted that the Welsh defence put in a great shift, restricting the Met to just one forwards' try, a resurgent Sam Bailey adding to his season's impressive tally. In the end, a single conversion kick separated the two sides. The Met will be kicking themselves all the way back up the M4.
