Police make happy return to Old Glynonians

The Met made a welcome return to Old Glyns following the hosts' relegation in 2015/16 writes Gilbert Ball. Previous matches between the two clubs have been cracking but feisty games... the 2017 encounter was simply a good, solid game of rugby. The only downside being a couple of unfortunate injuries incurred by the 'boys in blue'.

Both teams started the match with the packs running the hard yards and both putting in some great tackles, allowing neither side the room required to make decisive gains. It took nearly 20 minutes before the scoreboard rattled into life. As in the season's opener last week, it was The Met's flying back, Chris Holloway who opened the gates with an unconverted try. With Police nerves settled, The Met were in the groove to steadily add to the "points for" column, and Holloway's fellow leading point scorer, JJ Connolly, spotted a gap and scored underneath the posts putting The Met 12 points to the good going into the break.

Half time came and new coach Jake Cottrell was very happy with the defensive display on which much hard work had been applied during the week's training.

The second half gave The Met two natural advantages, the slope and the wind, both of which were used to maximum effect. When the opportunity arose, Connelly planted a penalty into the corner giving his forwards the opportunity to utilise a rolling maul and, as a result, Sam Walsh placed the ball down with an elegance that only a forward can provide and truly appreciate.

The Met were forced to make a few changes due to injuries. Debutant Chris Bamber-Blake (who would have been in the starting line-up if his car had started or if Uber had not had their licence revoked) joined the fray and was more than a handful in attack and defence for Old Glyns. His powerful running was able to assist putting in Chris Holloway and Cormac Healy for two further tries.

The victory was secured after a further try and a second hat trick in consecutive weeks for Chris Holloway... and like the previous week the lack of a jug was noted by the 17 other players making it possible and more importantly making the flyer look good... needless to say, the squad may not be shelling out much at the Xmas doo should a lack of jugs continue and more hat tricks are scored!

The score ended Old Glyns 0 v Met Police 36. A solid bonus point win and, to the coaches' huge delight, a complete shut out in defence.

Next week The Met host Croydon RFC at Imber Court for a 3pm Kick Off.
