Improving Police look to go at least one better after last season's near miss

The League season kicks off on Saturday and Met Police RFC are aiming for the top spot in Surrey 3. Last season ended on a dreadfully disappointing note: thrashing Reeds but allowing them to sneak the promotion spot with a try bonus point. A surprise defeat against London Media and a vastly improved Old Haileyburians upset what had otherwise been a memorable season for The Met.
This season, the Met is determined to put those woes behind them and settle for nothing less than top spot and promotion. The majority of the playing roster remains unchanged but is now enhanced by the ability to field a regular 2nd XV. A full fixture list has been drawn up and, for the first time this century, London's Finest will have nearly 40 players match-fit and competing for the first team places.
The first visitors to Imber Court are old friends and foes, Merton. It's a good test for the opener and Met will be hoping to lay down a marker as the team to beat. Imber Court is in first class condition despite the building work taking place under the stand, and one can anticipate fast, free-flowing rugby on the perfect surface.
The afternoon is preceded by the Met being awarded its RFU Accreditation. It seems slightly odd that a club with the Met's rich history is only just receiving this award, but it is actually a great reflection on the hard work of committee and players and the resurgence of the Club since the nadir of the early 2000s. Add to this the re-emergence of the Met's inter-Borough Dowdeswell Cup competition and it looks like 2017-18 should be a marvellous season for Met Police Rugby.
